Carnaval in Panama is just around the corner and its time you get prepared. This year Carnaval begins on the 21st and ends on the 24th of February. If you plan on going to Carnaval to party I would suggest that you have a full week, 4 days to party like a Panamanian, and 3 days to recover like a gringo. I don't want to spoil the experience for you, so I will just tell you what to bring to be prepared for an insane weekend in Panama. 1. Any light clothing that can get wet/stained/lost. 2. Somewhat waterproof plastic bag for money and COPY of your passport. 3. Cooler with lots of beer and Seco. 4. One or two nice shirts with jeans for the night party. 5. Camera, waterproof is recommended, with a strap to tie it to your body. 6. A sense of humor and adventure. 7. A tent or something to sleep on (if you don't already have a place to stay.) As long as you are ready to have a great time ad party like a Panamanian, then Carnaval is for you. Where should I go you ask. Las Tablas, especially if it is your first time. Don't listen to all the naysayers out there, go big or don't go at all. Once you experience a real Carnaval in Panama, then you can go alternate kiddy Carnavals elsewhere. When in doubt, take a "streek" of Seco (shot, you will be offered this many times.) Panamanians are excited to have you party with them, alcohol will be passed around freely, so don't forget to share yours too. I mentioned bring a tent or something to sleep on, there are places to stay outside town, like the beach or on the street. Renting a house is always a nice option, but may be a bit pricy or hard to find, especially if you don't have a connection there. I will put up a list of places to stay around Las Tablas soon. Happy Carnaval season! |
